Bathtub Sewer Backup Cleanup: When To Call a Professional

Sewer water coming out of a bathtub and bathroom sink Bathtub sewer backup in Boca Raton, FL

Bathtub Sewer Backup Cleanup

Experiencing a sewer backup in the bathtub of your Boca Raton, FL, home can be extremely stressful. Sewer lines may break during violent storms, or drains may become clogged with mud, leaves and other types of debris and cause the backup. If you are planning to clean the mess up yourself, it is important to understand when taking action is plausible and at what point you need help from a flood damage restoration service.

If the Water Is Spilling Out of the Tub

If the bathtub backup resulted in only a few inches of water, then you can probably handle the cleanup yourself. Gather these essential tools before you begin:

  • A wet/dry vacuum cleaner
  • Heavy-duty rubber gloves and boots
  • A dust mask with a filter

You may want to seal off the area to prevent odors from spreading into other areas of your home. If the water has spilled out over the edges of the tub and caused flooding, call in professional water damage services for assistance.

If Raw Sewage Is Present

Most sewer backup problems are typically caused by outdoor flooding and can affect every bathroom in your home. You can remove sewage water from each tub on your own if the flood was not too severe; however, if raw sewage is present, consider calling a flood damage and restoration service to drain it away. When water is contaminated at this level, it must be disposed of properly and professionally.

If Mold Growth Has Begun

If standing sewage water in your bathtub has encouraged mold growth, it is a good idea to let your flood damage technicians remove both. Black mold growth can be common where contaminated water is present and could be difficult to remove with ordinary household cleaning agents.
When a sewer backup affects the bathtub in your Boca Raton, FL, home, you may want to move forward with cleanup efforts yourself. However, knowing when to call in a professional can keep you from making an error that could cause serious problems in the future.

The Main Benefits of Flood Insurance

Flood insurance form on a table with a pen and glasses on a table Flood insurance covers a number of scenarios

Most business owners don't love dealing with insurance until they need it. Insurance can be complicated and dry, but when a claim is honored and the payment comes through then insurance can seem like the greatest thing since sliced bread. There are many different kinds of insurance, and a variety of ways to customize a policy. Flood insurance is a particular type of coverage that can strengthen a company's ability to withstand a major storm or flood. This coverage is normally not part of regular commercial property insurance, which covers wind, lightning, fires and other situations. Under many circumstances coverage for floods is a requirement, particularly if your location in Mizner Park,FL is in a high-risk flood area and you have a loan with a regulated lender.

What Is Covered

Flood insurance covers a number of scenarios. The most common include the following:

  • High waters from rivers and streams
  • Unusually heavy or prolonged rains that result in saturated ground
  • A storm surge
  • Broken dams or levees
  • Heavy snow melt around the foundation
  • Clogged municipal drainage systems

The coverage typically includes damage to your property and to its contents. Standard commercial insurance normally covers water damage that comes from above, such as rain and snow. As always, if you experience extensive water damage, contact a reputable water mitigation company in Mizner Park,FL.

What Is Not Covered

Each policy is different, but in general flood insurance does not include damage to exterior elements such as landscaping and sewage systems. Company vehicles may not be covered; however, there may be coverage from water damage in your business vehicle insurance policy. The financial losses associated with a business interruption from a flood are not typically covered, but they sometimes can be negotiated into a custom policy. The eradication of mold after a flood may be covered so long as you took quick and reasonable action to address the problem.

What to Do If Your Toilet Overflows

Whether it’s caused by something small like a clogged pipe or a larger issue like sewer damage, an overflowing toilet is not something you want to happen in your Whisper Walk,FL, home. Not only is it frustrating, but it can cause damage to your house. If you have a backed-up or overflowing plumbing fixture and don’t know what to do next, keep the following steps in mind.

1. Determine the Cause of the Problem

Because an overflowing toilet can be caused by a variety of things, you will need to determine this so you know the best way to proceed. Some potential causes are a clogged pipe, sewer damage, overgrown tree or plant roots and broken pipes.

2. Move Items From the Area

If the flooded toilet has caused an excessive amount of water to fill the area, then you should move what you can to keep it from being damaged. For items that are already wet, set them aside so that they can dry. You may be able to salvage them.

3. Cleanup and Sanitization

The water coming from a toilet overflow may be contaminated with waste, sewage and bacteria, so it is important to thoroughly sanitize the area once the water has been removed. Gloves and other protective gear should be used during this process. Instead of attempting to clean up on your own, you may want to hire a sewage company to do it for you.

4. Repair Any Damage

When large amounts of water sit for an extended period, they can cause quite a bit of damage, from warping wood to mold growth. If this has happened, it will need to be repaired. If the cause of the overflow is a broken or damaged plumbing system, then your pipes will need to be fixed or replaced as well.
If there is sewer damage or any other type of water damage to your home, you can have it taken care of by a professional cleanup and restoration company. Not only can they locate the source of the problem, but they can also perform repairs on the house and salvage many of your damaged belongings.

There's Water Damage, and Then There's Secondary Damage

There's Water Damage, and Then There's Secondary Damage

Unfortunately, if you've been hit with water damage at your commercial building in Boca,FL, it might not end there. If you let it sit too long, you can end up with secondary damage, as well. One example of this could be black mold. What else should you look for?

Wood Damage

Wood can be very susceptible to water damage. If it is left damp or wet after a flood event, it may end up needing replacement. The same might even happen if you haven't experienced water damage, but are in a high humidity environment. Some potential effects are:

  • Rotting plywood, flooring or framing
  • De-laminating of flooring or furniture
  • Discoloration or warping

Mold

Most property managers have heard of black mold, which is something you never want to see in your building. However, there are many different types of mold, and their spores exist in the air all around us both inside and outside. All the mold is waiting for is a moist, warm and dark environment in which to grow. If you have recently experienced water damage, especially to your carpeting or drywall, you may have inadvertently created the perfect environment for mold to thrive. Get everything dried out as soon as possible.

Rust

A form of secondary damage that can occur on metal is rust. The same story goes for this phenomenon; if you leave it wet it will get damaged. Steel is especially sensitive to rust. In addition to properly drying all of your metal equipment and furniture, you can also apply special sealants specifically made to protect against rust. You may even want to do this if you haven't yet experienced water damage.
Black mold and other forms of secondary damage can cost you just as much, if not more, than the primary damage from water. In order to avoid this, take care of water damage right away with a professional water damage remediation service.

Mold Cleanup and Prevention

A small closet, it has hangers, plastic boxes with items in it, walls are covered with mold Mold damage in a Boca Raton, FL home

Removing black mold or any type of mold growth in your Boca Raton, FL, home can be a daunting task. You may be tempted to dry up the water and hope the mold goes away on its own. Unfortunately, that will not happen. Although removing the moisture source is important, the mold has to be killed and then removed for the problem to be fully solved.

Mold Cleanup

Every mold situation is unique, so the removal process varies. However, the basic steps are the same:

Assess the situation. Determine the extent of the mold growth and the type of mold if possible.
Dry the area, and address the moisture problem.
Contain the mold. Do not run the HVAC system because this can spread mold spores.
Clean the mold. A dilute bleach mixture or a commercial mold cleaner will work.
Remove any unsalvageable material.
Restore and repair the mold-damaged surfaces.

For small areas of mold growth, you may be able to do the cleanup yourself. However, with black mold or large infestations, you may need professional help.

Prevention

To avoid future mold damage, the most important step you can take is addressing the moisture problem. Most houses have surfaces on which mold can grow, so keeping your home dry is the best preventive measure. Repair leaks promptly and try to keep the humidity below 50%. Additionally, checking areas that are not normally visible, such as behind appliances and furniture, can help you spot a mold problem early and address it before it spreads.
Unfortunately, mold does not go away on its own. Whether you are dealing with black mold or a more benign variety, a certified restoration company can make sure the mold problem is fully addressed and that mold levels in your home return to normal. Then you can take steps to make sure the mold growth does not return and your home stays healthy for years to come.

4 Ways to Reduce the Effects of Outdoor Flooding

9/11/2019 (Permalink)

Someones hand holding mulch Lighter mulch will float easily and can sometimes clog your drains, so invest in a heavier variety

The Following Tips Can Help Reduce Outside Flooding

During a storm, it is not uncommon for homeowners in Mizner Park,FL, to experience outside flooding and damage to their homes. This can be frustrating, but there are some things that you can do to limit the effects of the storm.

1. Use Rain Spouts to Divert Water

Even small changes can make a big difference during a rain storm. If your drains are directing water too close to your walls, it can cause flooding in this area and damage the building. Something as simple as using a spout diverter to redirect the water can prevent the need for costly repairs.

2. Use Heavier Mulch

It might not amount to a lot of damage, but cleaning up mulch in your yard after a storm can take up a lot of time and effort. Lighter mulch will float easily and can sometimes clog your drains, so invest in a heavier variety. It is more likely to stay where it’s meant to and can even absorb some excess water to reduce outside flooding in other areas.

3. Grow a Garden

Planting a garden in your yard can do a lot more than just providing some colorful scenery. Like mulch, the soil in this area will absorb the rain more easily and keep it from pooling in other places. If you are using your garden for this purpose, it is best to choose plants with a high moisture tolerance.

4. Create Driveway Drainage

If you have a driveway, it can contribute to runoff during severe weather, particularly if it is made of concrete. Adding some form of rain drainage on the sides of the driveway can help keep the water from pooling in your yard. If you are planning on redesigning the area, consider using gravel instead of solid pavement.
Using these tips can help reduce outside flooding, but if damage is done to the building, you should take care of it as quickly as possible. A water damage restoration company can perform any necessary cleanup as well as repairs.

Securing Commercial Property After a Fire

Protect Your Property From Further Damage

After a fire at your Boca,FL, commercial property, you may feel overwhelmed with getting the insurance straightened out, repairing the property and handling everything else you have to do. A security fence or other safety measures may be the last thing on your mind. However, it is important to protect your property from further damage, which can take many forms.

1. Prevention of a Second Fire

If the fire department was called to the scene, the firefighters will make sure the fire is completely out. If you put the fire out yourself, it is up to you to ensure the fire is fully extinguished. Make sure to check for any lingering flames or still-smoldering embers, as these could quickly turn into a full-blown blaze. If an appliance is to blame for the fire, make sure to turn it off. In the case of an electrical fire, be sure to turn off the electricity until an electrician does an inspection and repairs any faulty wiring.

2. Protection From Unwanted Visitors

Unfortunately, some people consider fire-damaged buildings to be ideal targets for burglary. Your security system may have been damaged in the fire, and vandals are likely able to cut through tarps and plywood. Luckily, a security fence can add an additional layer of protection. Not only can a fence help prevent burglaries, it also keeps out curious lookie-loos who may injure themselves on your property and hold you liable.

3. Protection Against Mother Nature

Make sure to board up or tarp over any holes in the structure, including windows that the fire department may have broken in order to release smoke. Doing so prevents rainwater, snow and wildlife from further harming your building and its contents.
The first step of the fire restoration process is preventing further damage. A certified restoration team can determine if you need tarps, plywood, a security fence or some combination of these and other protective measures to keep your building safe from after-fire dangers.

4 Tips for Storm Season Preparation

Sandbags It's a good idea to have sandbags on hand during spring storm season

Follow These Tips to Keep Your Building Safe and Dry Through Most Storms

If a natural disaster occurs in Mission Bay,FL, you may not be able to avoid significant damage to your commercial building. With the proper preparation, however, you can weather the average spring storm just fine. Follow these tips to keep your building safe and dry through most storms.

1. Direct Water Away From Building

You can minimize the risk of storm damage by redirecting the flow of floodwaters. If the storm brings a heavy rain, clear gutters and properly angled downspouts can ensure that it stays away from your building's foundation. If you notice water pooling near your building after a storm, have your landscapers rebuild the slope of the area to angle away rather than toward the base of the structure.

2. Install Sump Pumps

Having sump pumps in your basement can curtail a flooding problem before it gets out of hand. If a storm or a pipe break floods your basement, the sump pump activates and starts to pump the water out before it has a chance to cause extensive damage that only water restoration experts can fix. It's a good idea to hook it up to your backup generator, just in case the storm causes a power outage.

3. Block Flood Waters

It's a good idea to have sandbags on hand during spring storm season. Sandbags can be used around the perimeter of your building and in front of doors and windows to provide an extra line of defense against encroaching water.

4. Watch the Weather

Awareness can be a powerful prevention measure during storm season. Keep an eye on the local weather reports, particularly on days when conditions are likely to produce more than just a light shower. Knowing that the storm is coming in advance gives you more time to activate your plans.
Knowing how to protect your building can save you a lot of time and money. Damage from a spring storm can be avoided if you take the proper precautions.

The Guide to Flushing Your Water Heater

Steps To A Water Heater Flush

To keep your water heater in Whisper Walk,FL  in top condition, you have to take the steps to make it happen. If you perform regular maintenance and flush the sediment buildup, you can save yourself money in repairs and other damages. Fortunately, the steps to a water heater flush are easy enough to follow.

What Tools You Need

Before you begin, you will need three different tools. Those tools include:

  • A designated drainage area
  • A screwdriver
  • A garden hose

Once you have these, you can start following the next steps to flushing your water heater.

Turn Your Heater Off

If you have a gas heater, then you need to make sure that you turn off the gas entirely. The pilot has to be extinguished. If you have an electric heater, then you can go to your circuit breaker and turn it off.

Prepare Your Drainage Area

Next, you connect the water hose so that you can prepare the drainage area. Connect the garden hose to the drain valve and run it to the area that you choose. This should be an area unaffected by sediment and warm water.

Complete Tank Drainage

Once you’re ready, you can open the drain valve and allow the water to flow. Next, go to your kitchen and turn on the hot water. When you do this, your water will drain quicker. You can turn off the supply valve after waiting another couple of minutes.

Close Your Valves

Once everything is drained, you can close the valves and turn the water back on. In the kitchen, the water flow will be sporadic at first. Once the stream is smooth again, you know that everything is running properly. After you do this, you can turn on the power and heating element again.

When it comes to your water heater, you need to make sure that you keep up with its maintenance. To do a regular water heater flush can keep problems from occurring. If you’re dealing with water tank issues or water damage, you may want to speak to a water damage repair service right away.

Clean Up Water Quickly to Avoid Mold Growth

7/23/2019 (Permalink)

Mold on drywall in a Highland Beach, FL building

Your business in Highland Beach,FL, is an everyday source of pride, service, and concern over a hundred things that must be kept in order to remain profitable. Water damage can affect your business as a result of weather, insect or rodent infiltration or an aging building, and is not one of the concerns you want to be faced with.

Water Damage and Mold Prevention Checkpoints

With water comes the potential for mold growth, as spores that exist nearly everywhere can take hold and reproduce quickly – often within 24 to 48 hours. Mold can weaken wood and other materials, causing soft spots or structural failure if not remedied in the early stages, but may be prevented by checking the following areas:

  • Roof leak occurring from failed flashings, inadequate gutters, or gaps between materials that need to be filled with caulk
  • Improperly sealed or loose caulk, or weather stripping around windows and doors
  • Burst pipes, malfunctioning water heaters, running toilets and swamp coolers
  • Leaking valves or fittings, or other faulty plumbing problems

Be Watchful

Any maintenance staff should routinely keep their eyes open for potential leaks or dripping, and fix anything right away. If it is beyond the scope of their ability, a plumbing professional should be arranged for and the repair should be done immediately. Mold growth can happen very quickly, so it is important to make any repairs and dry things out as quickly as possible.

Get Help if Needed

If more severe situations are discovered that entail water damage with mold, a trained mold and water remediation service in Highland Beach,FL, should be contacted in order to clean things up safely and restore a sound environment. High powered fans, dehumidifiers and other means can be employed to retard mold growth and appropriate cleaning and restoration can begin.

Prevention is the name of the game, but if the unexpected happens and you find water damage, take immediate action to prevent a worsening problem. Your business is less likely to suffer if these areas are monitored.

How Fires Can Lead to Water Damage

7/17/2019 (Permalink)

Fire damage in Boca Del Mar, FL

When you think about the destructive power of fire, you may think that water is about the only thing that can temper the flames. Indeed, if you a fire rages through your Boca Del Mar, FL, home, firefighters will use as much water as it takes to get it under control and minimize fire damage as much as possible. However, you may not realize that the very mechanism firefighters employ to eliminate the fire could also cause additional damage. In some cases, the water might even cause more damage than the flames.

How House Fires Start

There are many causes for fires in the home. Fire damage can vary considerably from minor and almost undetectable to severe and utterly destructive. It's important to understand how residential fires typically start so you can be aware of how to prevent them.

  • Unattended candles
  • Unattended food on the stove or in ovens
  • Improperly discarded cigarette butts
  • Faulty wiring or heating systems

How Firefighters Attack Them

Water is the most obvious method firefighters use to put out fires, but it's not the only solution. Fire extinguishers can be effective at subduing fires. Many of these devices spray out foam or other chemicals. Sometimes, firefighters will even let the fires burn out until until there is no more fuel.

When They Use Water

The image of a firefighter with a fire hose is a common one. When these first responders use hoses, they're not shy about putting large quantities of water on the fire. This is great for taking care of the flames, but it can also produce flooding and other water damage. Spraying water on the fire can ruin drywall, flooring and ceiling. This can also compromise the roof. This is why it's important to hire a professional restoration company that can handle both fire and water cleanup.
You've got enough fire damage to worry about, but don't forget about the problems water can cause in a fire. Make sure you hire the right team to help with water removal and rebuilding.

Not All Flood Claims are Made Equal

7/8/2019 (Permalink)

Roof damage caused by strong winds is likely covered

How do You Know When You Are Covered?

Flood insurance is tricky. Many homeowner’s policies cover certain flooding, like a sewer backup or bathtub backup, only in certain situations. For instance, if residential plumbing causes a backup, it is likely covered. However, if it stems from a natural flood, then a typical homeowner’s policy will probably not cover your flood claim. Additionally, your coverage may not include any other damages related to the initial flood, like mold growth. However, if you experience roof damage because of a storm’s high winds, which leads to a minor internal flood, your regular coverage may kick in, but how do you know when you’re covered?

Typical Storm Damage

When discussing typical storm damage, you need to consider wind, rain and property. Most insurers cover storm damage under the perils section of the policy, and in this section, they list the precise causes of loss they will cover. For instance, roof damage caused by strong winds is likely covered. Primarily, damage caused by the insurer's definition of a storm is probably covered under a standard policy.

Extreme Storm Damage

However, most policies will specify what severe weather damages they will cover. For instance, many insurance companies will not include a sewer backup caused by a storm surge or other flooding. These events are often deemed extreme weather events and considered too rare for universal coverage, meaning a specific policy, like flood insurance is needed.
Despite the policy breakdowns, after a flood, you may require the help of mitigation and remediation experts in the West Boca Raton, FL, area. These professionals will secure your property using storm shutters and help you determine who is financially liable for the damage to your property and its recovery.
When a flood claim involves external flooding, like a storm surge which causes a sewer backup, flood insurance is likely required for coverage. However, high winds resulting in roof damage and a minor flood may be covered in a standard homeowner’s policy. Therefore, it is best to check with your policyholder to review your coverage and inquire about other policy considerations.

3 Steps To Take After a Building Fire

6/26/2019 (Permalink)

The first step is to board up broken windows and doors

Fire Cleanup Process

Although many businesses in Boca,FL, have a contingency plan for emergencies, no owner wants to be in situation where it needs to be put into place. A fire can be especially disheartening, since the smoke damage often infiltrates areas that aren’t burned. If you are ever in the unfortunate situation of needing fire cleanup, the following steps will help to rebuild.

1. Board Up the Building

Once the fire department leaves the premises and gives you permission to start rebuilding, the first step is to board up broken windows and doors. It’s also a good idea to put tarps over exposed areas in the roof. Even if the fire damage is extensive, it is still important to protect the property. For example, a rainstorm following a fire could introduce water or mold problems in areas that could have been salvaged.

2. Secure the Perimeter

Many business owners fail to see the need to secure a building perimeter after fire damage, but it’s essential for several reasons. The most obvious reason is to prevent theft from possible looting. However, even if there isn’t much left to steal, you still need security fencing. A fire causes building instability, and any injuries on an improperly secured property are a liability to you.

3. Call a Restoration Company

Since very few business owners have experience with fire damage, the best course of action is to call a company that specializes in commercial fire cleanup. They have the knowledge to handle smoke damage and will find the best way to salvage as much property as possible. They also have experience working with insurance companies, so they can walk you through the often overwhelming process.
A fire in your building can be difficult to handle, but it is manageable. Be sure to secure the building to protect it from the elements, looting and people entering the area. Once that has taken place, a restoration company will help you rebuild and quickly get your company back up and running.

How To Avoid Accidental Fire Sprinkler Activation

6/18/2019 (Permalink)

Candles may trigger your sprinkler system

Fire sprinklers are an essential amenity in your commercial building, and their job can be lifesaving in the event of a fire. However, if your sprinklers activate randomly, they can cause significant water damage to your property. Here are some tips for proper sprinkler maintenance in Highland Beach,FL, to help prevent accidental activation.

Keep Heat Sources Away

A sprinkler that is overheated may become activated even if there are no signs of flames or smoke. Some common sources of heat that may trigger your sprinkler system if placed too closely to the sprinklers include:

  • Heat lamps
  • Construction lighting
  • Hearth fires
  • Candles

If any sources that produce an excessive amount of heat are too close to your sprinklers, they may cause a sudden activation. Be cautious when setting up your system and the surrounding area.

Maintain a Heated Building

If your commercial building is not consistently heated in cold weather, the water inside your sprinkler pipes can freeze and cause the piping to break. Broken pipes can then lead to leaking sprinklers, which is why you should be careful not to let the building reach freezing temperatures. In addition, installing foam sleeves or other insulation materials can help protect your pipes from cold weather and are effective sprinkler maintenance tools.

Refrain From Putting Pressure on Pipes

Cold weather is not the only factor that is harmful to your pipes. When sprinkler pipes are weighed down by heavy objects, they can break and cause the sprinklers to go off. Be sure not to hang on the pipes for any reason while working on or examining your sprinkler system, as the weight of the human body is often too much for the pipes to bear.
If you find that your fire sprinklers are leaking or activate suddenly, it’s crucial to keep any resulting water damage under control. Once you have worked on proper sprinkler maintenance, contact a water damage repair expert to help restore your business.

3 Things Not To Do After a Flood

6/14/2019 (Permalink)

Many homeowner’s who experience flooding for the first time are unprepared. Contact SERVPRO of South Palm Beach for your restoration process.

It’s one of many homeowners' worst nightmares: a large storm or local disaster has flooded your neighborhood in Boca Raton, FL. Many who experience flooding for the first time are unprepared and uninformed, not knowing what to do after the flood water has covered the streets or entered their home. To help you prepare, whether you’re facing a flooded home now or foresee its possibility in the future, here are three things not to do after a flood:

1. Remain in your home. For you and your family’s safety, if water has entered your home, it’s important to leave and not reenter until the flooding has subsided. In a flood’s immediate aftermath, the risk of rising water is still imminent due to the possibility of more rain, a compromised levy or busted dam. Find refuge outside the flood area, whether it be in a hotel, a loved one's home or a public shelter.

2. Touch the water. Flood water can be contaminated with any number of bacteria, sewage and/or chemicals that can be harmful to your skin and health. It’s also imperative to avoid standing water to minimize the risk of electric shock from electrical lines and equipment touching the water. If you must enter or be around the water for any reason, protective clothing such as rubber boots should be worn.

3. Fix it yourself. Repairing flood damage in a home can require a large number of construction materials, professional knowledge and skill to ensure the damage is fully repaired and any mold is removed. Instead of trying to take on the job yourself, it’s best to save time and additional headaches by contacting a water damage repair and restoration company.

For any homeowner, flood water is certainly an unwelcome sight. Knowing what to do, or not do, in this type of disaster is imperative to keep you and your family safe and to begin the restoration process successfully.

3 Reasons Your Water Heater Is Making Noise

6/12/2019 (Permalink)

Make sure to do regular maintenance to your water heater

Doing Regular Maintenance on Your Water Heater May Prevent Issues

Just like with most household appliances in Highland Beach,FL, doing regular maintenance on your water heater may prevent issues from arising. As a general rule of thumb, it should usually be on the quiet side. If you are consistently hearing strange noises coming from your machine, it is probably a good time to have it looked at. Here are three reasons why these sounds may be happening.

1. Sediment

Over time, sediment builds up at the bottom. This causes there to be a rumbling sound as the minerals are moved around. Performing a water heater flush regularly can help prevent this from happening. You really only need to do this around once a year, and it is something that you can do on your own, or you can choose to call a professional to help you.

2. Pipes

Older homes come with their own set of interesting sounds, one of which is rattling pipes. If you hear knocking noises coming from inside the walls, it very well could just be the pipes heating up. Although this is usually not an issue related directly to your water heater, you may want to have someone come take a look at what is going on so that you avoid any water damage.

3. Heat Traps

Heat traps are usually located in the pipes on top of the heater. They are there to ensure that the water flows in the right direction. If you hear ticking sounds from around your machine, it could be the heat trap. Typically, this is nothing to be concerned about, but you can talk to a professional about having it replaced if the sound bothers you.

Anytime you suspect something might be wrong, it is a good idea to have a water heater repair professional come take a look. Getting problems looked at as early as you can may help you avoid larger problems down the road. Be sure to do regular maintenance on your appliance so that it lasts as long as possible.

3 Steps To Remove Soot and Smoke From Contents

Many contents with soot or smoke damage can be cleaned and restored

3 Steps To Remove Soot and Smoke From Contents

Many contents with soot or smoke damage can be cleaned and restored. Homeowners should contact a damage mitigation and restoration company that will take these three steps to determine whether an item is a good candidate for content cleaning. Professionals may use specialized cleaning procedures such as dry-cleaning, foam or immersion.

1. Remove the Contents

It is necessary to remove items from the location of a fire in order to provide proper treatment. A restoration company will take all of the items that are likely to benefit from cleaning to an off-site facility. There, the condition of these items will be inspected and trained experts will attempt the most effective cleaning treatments.

2. Assess the Condition

Items covered in soot or with smoke residues can usually be cleaned. Contents that are burned or charred are usually not recommended for cleaning. Fire causes chemical changes to take place in most materials that may cause these items to re-contaminate a structure in which damage has been restored. Items that have been exposed to intense heat may be restored on a case by case basis. In some situations, heat alone may ruin delicate materials or electronic components and replacement may be necessary.

3. Treat the Contents

A variety of cleaning treatments are available for contents, from restoration-grade dry-cleaning to immersion in cleaning solution. Depending on the delicacy and porosity of an item, other approaches such as foam cleaning, spraying and wiping or even abrasive blasting may be the best option. Content restoration professionals have access to all of the equipment and solutions necessary to achieve the best results.

Items that have been treated with dry-cleaning or any other restoration method can be held in content storage until restoration work is complete at a residence in West Boca Raton, FL. Homeowners may prefer to work with a company that provides mitigation, restoration and content cleaning services.

Protect Your Home From Water Damage While on Vacation

5/4/2019 (Permalink)

Broken Pipes are a leading cause for Water Damage. Take the necessary precautions to avoid damage to your home while on vacation.

Nobody wants to return from vacation to find a flooded house in need of new carpet and water pipe repair. When a pipe bursts while you’re away for an extended period of time, water damage becomes more likely, which is why it’s important to take precautions.

Before your next trip, follow these leak-proofing steps to help ensure a dry house when you return to South Palm Beach, FL.

Perform a Visual Inspection

Before you leave, carefully inspect your home for water seepage. Some common sources of household leaks include the following:

• Windows
• Pipes
• Large appliances

Around windows, look for discoloration of surrounding surfaces and ensure the seals are in working order. In addition to searching for a broken pipe, inspect for rust and cracks, as these are signs of weakness in the metal. Inspect the hoses that connect major appliances, such as dishwashers and water heaters, to running water, ensuring there are no tears or kinks. Perform this inspection in advance to allow yourself time to make a water pipe repair or get help from a professional if necessary.

Guard Against the Elements

During cold months, leave your thermostat set on low to prevent water from freezing and bursting your pipes. Insulate those outdoors with foam or fiberglass sleeves that are sold in hardware stores. If you’ll be gone for a considerable amount of time, consider shutting off the water at the main and draining pipes if temperatures may reach freezing. Look into digital detection systems, which notify you of leaks and can even remotely shut off water.

Enlist Backup

If possible, arrange for someone to occasionally check on your house while you’re away. Show this person your house’s water shut-off valve and instruct him or her how to use the thermostat. Since water damage requires a hasty response, be sure the individual knows to immediately call a plumber or water damage repair expert at the first sign of trouble.

When in doubt, be proactive. After all, who wants to ruin a vacation by worrying about water pipe repair? By taking simple precautions against leakage, you can avoid concern about returning from vacation to a flooded home.

Can Building Owners Prevent Water Leaks?

4/20/2019 (Permalink)

Water leaks are the most common causes of business losses.

Water leaks are the most common causes of business losses. Regular plumbing inspections and maintenance may reduce the frequency of leaks and the severity of water damage at a building in Boca Raton, FL. Building owners should take the following steps to prevent damaged pipes from causing a slow leak or a sudden break that may result in flooding.

Periodically Inspect Plumbing

Property owners should have the plumbing system in a building inspected at least once a year, and a plumber should also notify an owner of signs of insufficient insulation or corrosion that could lead to frozen or leaking pipes in the absence of maintenance. Owners should be aware of the following factors:

  • Age of plumbing
  • Pipe materials
  • History of water damage

Accurate information will make it easier for an owner to anticipate and take measures to counteract the risk of damaged pipes at a facility.

Maintain Appliances

Any appliance connected to a water supply runs some risk of leaking. A property owner or manager should regularly check the connections and seals on all of these appliances:

  • Dishwashers
  • Washing machines
  • Water heaters

It is also a good idea to have appliances periodically inspected by specialists. Preventative checkups will be much less costly than emergency repairs and damage mitigation for a leak or flooding.

Rely on Trained Plumbers

While some minor issues can be handled by a non-professional with basic plumbing knowledge, more complex problems may require advanced techniques. Property owners should be aware of the skill level of the person working on pipes at a commercial property. The risk of preventable primary and secondary damage justifies spending more to have incidents resolved by a professional.

All of these measures can help the owners of buildings and businesses reduce the risk of water damage. If damaged pipes leak or burst, property owners should rely on the expertise of certified mitigation and restoration professionals in [City, State].

Identifying and Tackling Unwanted Mold in Your Business

4/15/2019 (Permalink)

It’s important to recognize when moisture levels can become a mold-inducing problem.

Mold’s best friend is moisture, and depending on the humidity, rain and storm frequency in Boca Raton, FL along with the chance of water leaks, your business may be at risk for unwanted fungus growth. Therefore, it’s important to recognize when moisture levels can become a mold-inducing problem. Learning how to identify and prevent the spread of mold, including Stachybotrys chartarum (also known as black mold), in your business is key to reducing your long-term costs and maintaining a clean environment.

Signs of Mold

While mold spores exist everywhere in small quantities, there are a few common signs your commercial building may require mold cleanup.

  • A strong, earthy and musty odor (often one of the first and most apparent signs)
  • Water damage caused by water leaks or previous flooding, often indicated by dark rings or discoloration on walls, ceilings, lumber or other surfaces
  • Dark splotches or spots on building materials that look dirty, furry, speckled or stained (black mold can even be multicolored and appear in shades of black, green, orange and brown, depending on its age and nutrient source)

Mold Overgrowth

Mold is a fungus that can easily grow in water-damaged or damp buildings, and a moisture problem in materials high in cellulose such as fiberboard, lumber and drywall is especially conducive to growth. Water leaks, persistent humidity levels above 45 percent or flood damage can quickly result in mold overgrowth within a commercial building. While there are many types, remediation efforts in a commercial building are often the same regardless of type.

Professional Help

If you suspect black mold or another type of growth in your business, the first step to solving the problem is to call a mold remediation specialist. A professional can help you address and resolve any moisture issues at the root of the problem. He or she can also provide a comprehensive remediation plan, including halting the spread of the fungus, air filtration, mold cleanup, removal and restoration.

If you have a moisture problem or mold in your commercial building, don’t wait to address it. Call for professional assistance before a small issue becomes a large one.

Estimating Damage After a Commercial Fire

4/5/2019 (Permalink)

Fire Damage at a local Boca Raton, FL facility.

After a fire at your Boca Raton, FL, business, the cost of cleanup and repair can run anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on the severity. The particulars of your insurance policy will also determine the price, depending on your deductible and what out-of-pocket costs you may incur. By working with the insurance adjuster and a professional fire restoration company, you should be able to get a good idea of the cost involved. Below are the main things to consider when creating an estimate.

1. Emergency Cleanup

The emergency cleanup makes sure no further damage is caused to the property through exposure to the elements or vandalism. Any holes in the walls or roof will be boarded up or covered with tarps, and any standing water will be removed from the building. There may be further cost if security fencing is installed.

2. Water Damage

Depending on the severity of the fire, and whether or not sprinklers were installed, the fire company may have used a great deal of water to subdue the blaze. Carpets and upholstery may be soaked, the structure itself may be waterlogged, and there may be mold and bacteria that need to be mitigated. Also, firefighters may have used chemical extinguishers that leave residues and contaminate the air. Special equipment must be employed to dry, dehumidify, clean and sterilize.

3. Smoke Removal

The cost of cleaning up damage and odor from smoke and soot must be figured in to the estimate as well. The methods and equipment used will depend upon the type of combustible substances. Smoke and soot from wood, protein or synthetic material will each create a different kind of cleanup problem.

4. Restoration Costs

After the cleaning and disinfecting are completed, the actual replacements and repairs can take place. Depending on how bad the actual fire damage was, repairs may involve only replacing carpeting and repainting, or it may entail rebuilding entire rooms.

While the cost of repairing damage from a commercial fire can vary greatly. However, it should not be difficult to estimate once all of the factors are taken into consideration, and the damage has been assessed by a qualified professional.

Is the Exterior of Your Commercial Property Ready for a Storm?

4/5/2019 (Permalink)

Are you prepared for a Storm?

Storms can cause extensive damage to the exterior of a commercial property. Depending on the level of commercial insurance coverage held by the building owner, there may be limits on the external portions of the property that are protected. Review your coverage, schedule a building inspection, and perform exterior maintenance on a regular basis.

Five steps that will help owners prepare the exterior of a commercial property for a storm.

1. Choose exterior doors rated for high wind speeds.

Exterior damage quickly becomes interior damage if a door fails. Exterior doors should be tested to stand up to wind loads and the frames should be anchored. Check to make sure these doors have appropriate drainage, flashing, sealant, and tracks. Door failure rapidly raises internal pressure and can cause structural damage.

2. Clear drainage systems.

Functional drainage systems prevent water from pooling on the roof or around the foundation of a structure. Clear roof drains, downspouts, and gutters several times a year as part of an exterior maintenance routine.

3. Trim trees.

Removing dead or loose branches from nearby trees can limit the extent of storm damage.

4. Secure loose items that may blow away or cause damage.

Don't forget about antennas on the roof or potted plants and trash cans on the ground.

5. Anchor outside HVAC equipment.

These components should be securely installed on a concrete pad. Depending on the severity of a storm, you may want to use hurricane straps or shut off these systems and cover equipment with a secured tarp.

These five exterior maintenance and storm preparation steps can help owners limit the extent of damage to the exterior of a commercial structure. Keeping your building maintained can pay off during adverse weather events. If the exterior or interior of a commercial property becomes damaged during a storm, contact a restoration company located in Boca Raton, FL.

3 Ways Landscaping Can Mitigate Flooding

4/5/2019 (Permalink)

Landscaping with strategic design can help to reduce the risk of flooding in regions with heavy precipitation.

Landscaping is not just for looks. Strategic design can help to reduce the risk of outside flooding at your home in Boca Del Mar, FL. If you live in a region with heavy precipitation, you should consider the following tips.

Three ways to facilitate rain drainage.

1. Adjust Grading and Add Slopes

The grade of your property should divert water away from the foundation of your home. You may want to consider adding swales to redirect water down into ditches. Line the lowest part with rocks or plants that have deep roots and high water tolerance to slow water flow. A French drain can also be a functional solution for outside flooding.

2. Garden With Flooding In Mind

In addition to growing plants in swales, you may also want to install a rain garden. The plants in this garden should have high tolerance for wet soil and should be native so that they require little maintenance beyond rainfall. Water can pool in these gardens during a rain storm and percolate down into the soil. Use heavier mulch in other garden beds to prevent wood from floating off and clogging drains. You should also be sure not to over-water beds situated near the foundation of your home.

3. Divert Rain Spouts

A functional drainage system is essential for preventing leaks and flooding. Make sure that gutters and downspouts are clear and that the outlets are diverted to prevent water from pooling next to the exterior walls of your home. You can also extend downspouts or install gutter guards.

These are three ways to use landscaping to reduce the issue of outside flooding at your home in Boca Del Mar, FL. You may want to consult with local rain drainage specialists to come up with the best solutions for your property. If your home floods, you can count on the expertise of storm and water damage restoration professionals.

How To Choose the Best Air Purifier

4/4/2019 (Permalink)

If you are using the purifier to improve the air quality of your home, you may want to consider a purifier with a HEPA filter.

How To Choose The Best Air Purifier

Mold spores are floating everywhere, outside, at work, and into your home. You can't completely prevent them from getting into your home, but you may be able to reduce the possibility of mold growth within your home. A top-quality air filtration purifier can trap spores and destroy existing mold.

What Are the Options?

As you research your options, there are some terms you should understand.

  • HEPA filter: This high-efficiency particulate air filter can remove up to 99.97 percent of particles that are 0.3 microns or larger. These filters are used regularly but can become home to mold if they aren't changed regularly.
  • Ultraviolet germicides: These products operate by irradiating the air to kill mold, bacteria, and viruses. The EPA warns that most appliances won't generate the necessary amount of radiation to effectively protect your home.
  • Carbon filters: An air purifier with this type of filter traps gases on a filter of activated carbon. It doesn't remove particles from the air so much as it captures airborne chemicals.
  • Ionizing purifiers and ozone generators: This technology uses electric charges to make particles attractive to surfaces. The ozone generated by these air filtration products can be problematic if you aren't careful.

Which Purifier Works Best?

The type of air purifier that's best for you depends on your situation. If you are using the appliance to treat an isolated mold problem, an ozone generator may be the most effective tool. If you are using the purifier to improve the air quality of your home, you may want to consider a purifier with a HEPA filter.

How Big Is Your Problem?

The next step to completing this decision is to determine the right size of purifier. For this part of the decision, it may be helpful to discuss your options with a local mold remediation and prevention company. These professionals can help you determine your level of risk and take accurate measurements of your home.

There are many impressive air filtration products available in Boca Raton, FL. Use available resources to make the decision best for your home and family.

How SERVPRO of South Palm Beach can help with Mold

3/27/2019 (Permalink)

Mold is a natural part of many environments. In outdoor conditions, it plays an important role in breaking down dead organic matter, but you want to avoid mold growth indoors. Here’s a look at why you may have a Boca Raton mold problem and how to tell if you need professional mold removal services.

What Causes Mold Growth?

The key to mold growth is moisture. Mold also needs organic material to grow and thrives in dark, dank places. Conditions that can cause indoor mold growth include:

  • A leaky pipe, window, or roof
  • Improperly cleaned up flood water
  • Standing water
  • Wet insulation
  • High indoor humidity
  • Moisture in the building foundation caused by poor drainage

Do I Need Professional Mold Removal Services?

Because of Florida’s high humidity, it’s more common for mold to grow indoors in this climate than in other areas of the United States. Sometimes, it’s easy to tell that you have a mold problem. Other times, it’s less apparent. Signs that you need professional mold removal include:

  • Visible mold: It’s easy to see mold growing on windowsills, shower walls, or under bathroom sinks. With a little more effort, you can also check the attic and crawlspace for visible mold growth. Where there’s a little mold, there is always the possibility there could be more.
  • Signs of excessive water: Stains on the wall or ceiling could indicate a roof leak, which probably means the insulation in the attic is damp and harboring mold growth. Bubbling, peeling, or cracking paint on the walls and ceiling are other clues that excess water is coming from somewhere.
  • Condensation: If condensation forms on the inside of windows or other smooth, cold surfaces, that’s a sign the humidity is too high indoors. Excess humidity creates an environment for mold to thrive.
  • Past water trouble: If you know you had a leaky roof, burst pipe, or flooding in the past, fixing the problem is just the first step. If you didn’t perform mold removal when you fixed the source of excess water, some may have been left behind. Remember, even if no mold is visible from your vantage point, that doesn’t mean mold couldn’t be growing behind the wall where water seeped through.
  • Health problems: Many people are allergic to mold, which may cause respiratory problems including sneezing, wheezing, shortness of breath, throat irritation, and asthma symptoms. The onset of new symptoms or worsening of existing conditions while you’re at home could be a sign that mold is growing there.
  • Musty smell: Mold gives off a certain smell that even those without allergies can detect. Don’t ignore the presence of a musty odor; you may not be able to see any mold, but it could still be growing under the carpet padding, around the foundation, or behind the bathroom tiles.
  • Toxic symptoms: Mycotoxins from certain molds have more severe repercussions than causing allergic reactions. They can cause headaches, difficulty concentrating, memory loss, dizziness, and other mental effects.

Don’t ignore these signs. Contact SERVPRO of South Palm Beach to have your Boca Raton home inspected for mold growth and begin the remediation process today.

3/24/2019 (Permalink)

Our mold remediation team is trained and certified by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification. This means we know mold, and know how to effectively provide remediation it so it ceases to be an issue.

If you think you have mold, give us a call and we will come take a look. And if you do have a mold problem, we will solve it.

WHERE DOES MOLD COME FROM?

Mold can creep up from a variety of sources. Often, mold is a by-product of a flood or other water damage. Improper or incomplete drying is usually the culprit. That is why the experts at SERVPRO take extra care of thoroughly drying a job to ensure that mold does not creep up later. But you need not always have “water damage” – for example, over the years, a simple thing like a pipe condensation can cause mold (again thanks to that humid South Florida weather), or a leaking roof, trapped moisture, a damp basement, or a hundred other reasons.

The key is to find it and remove it. Then, make sure it doesn’t come back. The trained professionals at SERVPRO of South Palm Beach will handle all phases of mold detection and removal, so you can be assured of your family’s health and well-being.

SERVPRO of South Palm Beach - Helpful Tips!!

3/23/2019 (Permalink)

A flooded Boca Raton home is a devastating event for any homeowner. It has the ability to ruin many of your possessions in addition to your property itself. Due to the fact that water damage can quickly become permanent if not addressed as soon as possible, if you do suffer flood damage to your home, it’s important that you call the professionals at SERVPRO of South Palm Beach to help restore the home. However, there are some things that you can do before they arrive. Here are some things you can do immediately after a flood to start the restoration process.

Check Before Entering Home

Before you re-enter your home after flood damage, check for any structural damage that may have occurred. Severe flooding or water damage has the ability to compromise the integrity of the structure. If you enter the home without closely inspecting what you’re walking into, the building could potentially collapse, trapping you inside. Once you’ve entered the home, you should be very careful about where you’re walking, especially if you’re moving from carpeting onto a hard surface.

Document Evidence

Once you have entered the home, document the evidence of that damage that has been done by taking photos of it. If there are any questions, particularly by your insurance company about the validity of your claim, you’ll have evidence to show them. While you document the damage, save any items that you can. Some items, such as porous materials, may have been damaged beyond repair. When the SERVPRO crew arrives to restore the home, they’ll save as many items as possible. But if there are items that have not been damaged, you can take them out to avoid any further potential damage.

Take Inventory

While you’re examining the damage that has occurred in your home, make a list of the damage or lost items in the home. Make sure to include the date they were purchased and their value with any receipts you may have. Store that list with any inventory of your possessions that you may have taken before the flood. If any of your possessions must be disposed of, which some may, make sure you have photographs of the items.

Turn Off Power

After the flood damage occurs, turn off all power, especially to the affected rooms. Also refrain from using any electrical appliances as you could electrocute yourself if you’re standing in water. Keep the power to the home off until an electrician can come and thoroughly inspect the system to ensure it’s safe to turn back on again.

Prevent Mold

Mold thrives in environments where moisture is present which makes flooded parts of a house ideal for mold growth. The existence of mold in a home can be hazardous so it’s important to prevent the mold from growing if at all possible. Removing any wet contents from the home as soon as possible will help to prevent such mold growth around the home.

Proper Protection

Regardless of how well you think you can clean up after a flood, you should call the professionals at SERVPRO of South Palm Beach to ensure that as much of your property is salvaged as possible. But if you do decide to start the cleanup process before they arrive, it’s important that you are properly attired. Wear long sleeves, pants, gloves, and boots when dealing with flood water to ensure your safety.

If you suffer flood damage in your home, you should contact the professionals at SERVPRO of South Palm Beach to clean up. But if you want to get the process started prior to their arrival, these tips will help you remain safe.

Boca Raton Water Damage Restoration Process

3/12/2019 (Permalink)

Home living room flooded caused by heavy rain. Contact SERVPRO of South Palm Beach at 561-391-3366 today and leave the cleanup process in the hands of trusted professionals.

If you have experienced a Boca Raton water damage from a flood or pipe rupture, professional water damage restoration is important for getting your home back to its original condition. SERVPRO of South Palm Beach professionals have the knowledge and expertise required to complete the restoration process. But just what does water damage restoration entail, and why is it important to count on a professional for the job?

If you need water damage restoration in South Palm Beach, FL, contact SERVPRO today by calling (561) 391-3366.

Steps in your Boca Raton Water Damage Restoration Process

  • Water removal: The first step is to get as much excess water out of the space as soon as possible. If a high water level results from excessive flooding, the water is pumped out using a truck-mounted or portable extraction unit. The cleanup crew then uses moisture detectors, hygrometers, infrared cameras, and other tools to find out where less obvious saturation has occurred. This supports more thorough water removal and better end results.
  • Drying: Water saturates most types of building materials, so it’s imperative to dry out the affected areas to prevent greater damage such as warping wood, crumbling drywall, rusting metal surfaces, weakened beams, and mold growth. SERVPRO of South Palm Beach professionals use high-tech drying equipment for the job. First, high-speed air movers create airflow over carpets, furniture, walls, and other affected surfaces to help in the drying process. Then, industrial-grade dehumidifiers help water evaporate more quickly so secondary water damage can’t occur when previously unaffected areas are exposed to excessive moisture.
  • Cleaning: Only after the water has been fully removed should the cleanup process begin. Water damage can leave a muddy mess behind that your professional crew is responsible for cleaning. Some permanently damaged materials may need to be replaced during this step in the restoration process.
  • Sanitation and odor removal: Items that have experienced water damage may give off an unpleasant musty odor even after the water has been removed. A professional cleanup crew uses deodorization and disinfecting products to get rid of smells and prevent bacteria, fungi, mildew, and mold growth from occurring.
  • Mold removal: Unless the drying process is fully completed within 24 to 48 hours, mold may start to grow in saturated areas. Fortunately, SERVPRO of South Palm Beach professionals are trained in proper mold removal techniques to help restore your home to its pre-water-damage condition.

Why Professional Water Damage Restoration Is Important

SERVPRO of South Palm Beach professionals undergo special training to learn about psychrometrics, the study of air and water vapor. They also become knowledgeable in how to use special industry equipment to its full potential. Each step in the water damage restoration process is critical to the success of the next step, and each restoration job differs slightly from the next. Some situations even call for special drying techniques that require for state-of-the-art tools and techniques.

Without proper training and knowledge, your home could be permanently damaged by water intrusion if you attempt to complete the remediation process yourself. Structural instability, excessive mold growth, and other problems could make your home unlivable. Why take the risk? Contact SERVPRO of South Palm Beach at 561-391-3366 today and leave the cleanup process in the hands of trusted professionals.

South Palm Beach Smoke and Soot Cleanup

2/26/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of South Palm Beach will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

If you’re unsure about the proper procedure or don’t want to conduct the cleanup yourself, a professional will be able to help- just call SERVPRO of South Palm Beach at 561-391-3366!

Important Steps When Dealing with Fire Damage in South Palm Beach

2/26/2019 (Permalink)

In the unfortunate event of a fire in your South Palm Beach property, you need to take the right steps to restore the structure and contents to preloss condition. Different steps are necessary to achieve the desired outcome. If more items can be salvaged, then it is possible to reduce the restoration costs. It is also essential to prevent additional damage from occurring before, or during restoration.

Carrying out a thorough inspection before starting the process of restoring fire damage is critical because it helps establish the true extent of the problem. Some aspects of the fire like smoke damage have far-reaching effects that are easy to miss from casual observation. For example, it is essential to establish whether the damage is predominantly from wet or dry smoke to choose the right cleaning procedures. Smoke also moves towards cooler areas and being gaseous it cannot be stopped by doors or windows, so it damages areas far from the origin of the fire.

Separating items according to the level of damage is necessary. Our SERVPRO technicians classify items into salvageable, non-salvageable and questionable items. Such separation helps in different ways. For example, creating the CCIS, content claims inventory, for the insurance adjuster is simpler especially when we use our electronic item tracking forms. It is also possible to save more items since it creates the opportunity to focus full attention on the questionable ones or even take them offsite for restorative cleaning.

While most of the damage happens during the blaze, secondary damages can happen after it is put out. Common ways that lead to secondary damage include exposure to moisture from the water used when putting out the fire. Staining or corrosion can also occur from soot and other smoke residues because of their acidic nature. Weather elements might also damage the structure. Our SERVPRO technicians extract any standing water and also wipe off residue from finished furniture surfaces, fiberglass, and chrome or iron trim finished areas.

Professional assistance can help you deal with the confusion that follows after a fire incident. If you’re unsure about the proper procedure or don’t want to conduct the cleanup yourself, a professional will be able to help- just call SERVPRO of South Palm Beach at 561-391-3366!

Addressing Safety Concerns in Boca Raton Water Damage Restoration in South Palm Beach

2/26/2019 (Permalink)

If a water damage incident occurs in your building and it is not attended to as soon as possible, further damage is likely to take place. When that happens, materials like drywall and flooring may weaken and cause possible structural hazards. We start by performing an inspection of your South Palm Beach property before offering appropriate water restoration and mitigation services. It means you cannot reenter the structure until we determine it is safe.

We are going to look at some of the safety steps that our SERVPRO of South Palm Beach technicians perform during water damage restoration in South Palm Beach. In incidents where the water enters the building from above, wet drywall can soften, and the ceilings might fall onto the occupants or our employees. To free water from the ceiling cavities, we drill weep holes. We avoid punching up the holes in a row to avoid introducing perforations on the ceiling. We usually punch the weep holes from the ceiling's outside to prevent it from collapsing. Also, we wait until the first hole stops draining before making the second one.

Usually, particleboard floors lose their stability when they are heavily soaked with water. In such cases, they might fail to support the weight of people or machines. We have to examine the subfloor and determine its stability before we proceed with the restoration process. Our SERVPRO of South Palm Beach technicians also check whether the site has sharp objects such as broken glass and exposed nails.

If you are unsure about the proper procedure or don’t want to conduct the cleanup yourself, a professional will be able to help- just call SERVPRO of South Palm Beach at 561-391-3366!

Lightning Truths and Myths

2/26/2019 (Permalink)

It's important that we know our facts about the weather patterns to prepare for any future emergencies.  Learn the common myths and facts about lightning during spring!

Myth: If it's not raining, then there is no danger from lightning.
Fact: Lightning often strikes outside of heavy rain and may occur as far as 10 miles away from any rainfall.  This is especially true in the western United States where thunderstorms sometimes produce very little rain.

Myth: The rubber soles of shoes or rubber tires on a car protect you from being struck by lightning.
Fact: Rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires proved no protection from lightning.  The steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.  Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.

Myth: "Heat lightning" occurs after very hot summer days and poses no threat.
Fact: "Heat lightning" is a term used to describe lightning from a thunderstorm too far away for thunder to be heard.

Candle Safety Tips

2/26/2019 (Permalink)

There is something calming about candles.  They look pretty, enhance the ambiance in a room, they give off a fragrant smell that can be extremely alluring. However, they can also be the cause of a house fire.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, 3 out of every 5 candle fires started when they were placed to something that can burn, such as furniture, bedding, or decorations.  Review the tips below to prevent any house fires from candles:

  • Blow out candles before leaving a room or going to bed
  • Keep candles one foot (30 centimeters) away from anything that can burn
  • Use a sturdy candle holder, that will not tip over easily
  • Put candle holders and a sturdy and unclutter surface
  • Light candles carefully, keep your hair and any loose clothing away from the flame
  • Do not let the candle burn all the way to the bottom; put it out before it gets too close to the container or holder
  • You should not light a candle if oxygen is used in the home
  • During a power outage, use a flashlight or battery-operated lighting instead of a candle

Although candles can add to the décor in a room, they can also add danger.  Remember candles are an open flame which means they can easily ignite.  Create an environment that is safe for you, and use alternatives to prevent any candle fires in homes like using flameless candles.  As always, remember SERVPRO of South Palm Beach in case a mishap happens at 561-391-3366!

Small Water Damages Become a Nightmare for your South Palm Beach Business

2/26/2019 (Permalink)

What happens when those small water damages go unnoticed, or moisture soaks into a building’s structural components where it cannot be detected by the naked eye?  These incidents may sound relatively harmless, but given time, excess moisture can lead to serious problems.

In as little as 24 to 48 hours, microscopic mold spores, naturally present in all structures, can grow into visible mold.  Fueled by the moisture, these fungi feed on a variety of building subcomponents including wood, paint, paper, carpet padding, and contents.

While the debate rages on regarding impact mold have on human health, mold and mildew growth are recognized as major contributors to indoor air quality problems.  These nightmares happen every day as a direct result of those small water damages that gradually take their toll on buildings and homes.  The recipe for disaster is the combination of excess moisture, a food source for mold found in organic building materials (such as wood, drywall, some types of insulation), and a time delay in removing the moisture.

If your home or business encounters water damage, call SERVPRO of South Palm Beach immediately at 561-391-3366. Our professionals have the expertise to reverse and prevent the effects of flooding and water damage.

SERVPRO Technicians are Thoroughly Trained to Remediate Damage after a Flood

2/26/2019 (Permalink)

Flood damage is often extensive, and can carry more than a few hazards in its waters. Floods are no simple matter to clean up and repair after, and often require specialized training and heavy machinery to truly have all traces of them removed from a home. SERVPRO technicians are trained extensively on how to deal with floods and the hazards they contain, and have the adequate equipment to deal with them as well. Here are some of the most critical factors in a flood, and reasons why you should leave the process of navigating them to a professional.

Black Water

Floods are often categorized by their water color, with the most dangerous color being "black" water. This is extremely murky water that often contains extremely high concentrations of contaminants, and is one of the main reasons why cases of flood damage in Nashville are treated with extreme caution. This water may contain chemical hazards, dangerous microbes and viruses, shards of broken material, and many other unseen dangers. This type of floodwater requires extreme caution when being dealt with, and should never be touched by a homeowner or untrained individual.

Broken Glass, Wood, and Other Material

Shards of broken material are particularly dangerous after a flood, as they may be difficult to spot and in high concentrations. Floods are not gentle, and more often than not something breaks in their wake, creating sharp bits and pieces which may be scattered about an area. In addition to the cut and stab hazard these present, they also carry a very high risk of infection, as floodwaters often contaminate every surface they touch with microbes and viruses.

Weakened Structures

After unusually heavy flooding, the structure itself may be unstable, as floodwaters soak into building foundations, walls, and supports. Our technicians are trained to be able to identify these risks, but you may not be. In some cases, it is not until all water has been pumped out and the room has been thoroughly dried that structural safety can be assured.

SERVPRO of South Palm Beach trains all of its technicians extensively, and you can rest assured that they will be able to clean and restore your property in a safe and efficient manner after any flood damage. Call us 24/7 at 561-391-3366 for our help with any flood damage emergency!

When there is water in your home, mold can quickly become an issue. It can cause health issues and damage to your property. SERVPRO of South Palm Beach has the training, protective gear, and specialized equipment to handle your mold problem.

Call SERVPRO of South Palm Beach
The mold cleanup and restoration process begins when you call us at 561-391-3366. One of our employees will ask a series of questions to help determine the necessary equipment, resources, and personnel needed.

Assessment
Your property will be carefully inspected for signs of mold using various technologies to detect mold and hidden water sources. Mold feeds on cellulose and water and can be hidden from plain view.

Containment
Different containment procedures will be placed to prevent the spread of mold, like negative air chambers to isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process.

Air Filtration
Specialized filtration equipment captures microscopic mold spores out of the air. SERVPRO of South Palm Beach technicians use powerful air scrubbers and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in progress.

Removing
The process of mold remediation depends on the amount of mold growth and the type of surface it's on. Anti-fungal and antimicrobial treatments will be used to eliminate mold colonies and help prevent new ones from forming. Removing and disposing of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and flooring, may be necessary.

Cleaning
SERVPRO of South Palm Beach cleans your furniture, decorative items, curtains, and other restorable items affected by mold. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to clean and sanitize your belongings.

Restoration
Depending on the level of mold damage, some building materials may have to be removed. Restoration may involve minor repairs or major repairs such as reconstruction.

Tips for Protecting Yourself from Mold During Cleanup

2/8/2019 (Permalink)

During the process of mold remediation, it’s important to protect yourself, and your staff, with the proper safety gear and equipment. If you’re concerned about conducting the procedure yourself, a SERVPRO of South Palm Beach mold remediation specialist may be able to help. The recommendations for a safe cleanup remain the same for everyone involved.

1. Wear Protective Clothing

When cleaning up mold growth it’s important to wear protective clothing. A coverall suit is recommended in most cases, but long sleeves tucked into gloves, and long pants may work just as well. Protective gear is an important tool for keeping any cleaning agents and mold spores off of your skin. If wearing everyday clothing instead of a protective suit, it’s important to launder them in hot water immediately after use.

2. Change Before Entering an Uncontaminated Area

Another way to protect your business is to change out of your safety gear before entering uncontaminated areas. This can help prevent the spread of mold spores into areas where mold growth has not yet occurred. The necessity of changing gear is why many professional use covers for their hair and shoes, as well as wear protective over-suits.

3. Wear a Mask and Goggles

The use of a respirator mask and protective goggles are also recommended. These can help prevent the inhalation of any cleaning fumes, and keep dust or debris common to clean up out of your eyes. The mask and goggles should fit snugly without pinching.

Using the proper equipment when cleaning up mold can help protect everyone, including the cleanup crew and the employees who regularly work in the building. Proper gear can not only help prevent the spread of mold to uncontaminated areas but allow for cleaning solutions to be used safely. If you’re unsure about the proper procedure or don’t want to conduct the cleanup yourself, a professional will be able to help- just call SERVPRO of South Palm Beach at 561-391-3366!

Do you have Mold?

2/8/2019 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

If you see signs of mold, call us at SERVPRO of South Palm Beach! We're available 24/7 at 561-391-3366.

What To Do Until Help Arrives At Your Fire Damage

2/8/2019 (Permalink)

A fire can leave behind soot, smoke damage and a host of other problems. Ceilings, walls, woodwork, carpeting, and floors will often need thorough professional cleaning. If your home or business suffers a fire, it is important to take the appropriate steps to prevent further damage until your local SERVPRO of South Palm Beach arrives. The following tips may help reduce damage and increase chances of a successful restoration.

DO:

-Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpet.

-Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork. n Place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.

-If electricity is off, empty freezer/ refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odor.

-Wipe soot from chrome kitchen/ bathroom faucets, trim and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of lubricant.

-If heat is off during winter, pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilet bowls, holding tanks and tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures.

-Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system.

Call SERVPRO of South Palm Beach if you've had a fire or would like to know how we can help in the event you do- 561-391-3366.

5 Tips To Prevent Water Damage From Drain Clogs

1/31/2019 (Permalink)

More water damage insurance claims are filed for pipe breaks and plumbing or appliance issues than weather-related causes. Most plumbing failures in the kitchen and the bathroom are easily prevented. If a clog causes a backup and it is not caught right away, the resulting water damage can lead to warped hardwood floors, popping tiles, and wet moldy building materials. Prevent clogs, backups, and pipe breaks by following these easy tips to keep things flowing!

  • Cooking grease can wreak havoc on your pipes. Dispose of grease properly- never down the drain. Line a bowl with aluminum foil, and when the grease hardens you can just ball it up and throw it away! Another option is to use an old coffee can to dispose of the grease or repurpose the leftover grease.
  • Chemical clog removal products can corrode your pipes over time. It's best to use natural clog removal methods such as baking soda or vinegar.
  • Keep the toilet drains clear by avoiding flushing products like feminine hygiene products and moist "flushable" wipes.
  • Use a drain guard or screen in the shower to catch hair. Avoid using oily or greasy body care products that can gum up the pipes.
  • Always run cold water in a garbage disposal before adding food. Avoid tossing stringy or high fiber foods that are difficult to break down. Examples are carrots, potato peels, corn on the cob and celery.

Hopefully, these tips will help make your kitchen and bathroom maintenance easier. Following these simple tips are the first defense in preventing water damage from a clogged or broken pipe. If your home or business encounters water damage, call SERVPRO of South Palm Beach immediately at 561-391-3366. Our professionals have the expertise to reverse and prevent the effects of flooding and water damage.

Electrical Fire Damage Cleanup in Boca Raton

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of South Palm Beach recently restored a Boca Raton home that experienced fire damage from an electrical fire. The fire originated in the attic causing soot and water damage to the first and second floor. Despite the weekend timing, our crew arrived on site within hours to perform emergency services.

The technicians immediately set to work by removing debris and extracting water to dry the home. The electrical fire in the attic caused debris of ceiling drywall and insulation to litter the second floor and stairwell. Soot and smoke residue can continue to cause damage long after the fire is out. Our fire damage restoration technicians are professionally certified to handle these challenges. Fire mitigation services included removal of the charred building materials, cleaning and deodorizing the damaged structure and setting up drying equipment. We also coordinated pack out and storage services to allow for proper restoration and reconstruction.

Call SERVPRO of South Palm Beach if you've had a fire or would like to know how we can help in the event you do- 561-391-3366.

Boca Raton Water Damage & Flooding

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

As the rainy season approaches in Boca Raton, excessive rainfall means the potential for leaky roofs and other types of water damage. These situations are some of the most costly that a homeowner or business owner can face. Water can quickly lead to mold growth, damage furniture and drywall, and compromise the very structure of a house or building.

Common causes of water damage include corroded or damaged pipes, blocked gutters, and leaks from roofs or windows.

To prepare for flooding, elevate the water heater and electric panel in your home or building. Install and know how to locate and safely shut off all utilities.

There are also several measures you can take to help prevent water damage. Inspect sinks, showers, toilets, gutters and downspouts to ensure there are no blockages.  If the ground is pitched toward your house or building, water will run back toward it, causing leaks or flooding. So, make sure the ground pitch is angled away from your home or facility.

Water and flood damage restoration is not a do-it-yourself project. It is a lengthy and potentially dangerous process that should be tackled only by experienced professionals, like the experts at SERVPRO of South Palm Beach. If you have an issue, call SERVPRO of South Palm Beach right away. While you wait for our restoration team to arrive, take the following steps:

1. Turn off all power
2. Move important possessions and documents to safety
3. Raise all furniture or remove it entirely
4. Let in fresh air if weather permits
5. If safely doing so is possible, use buckets to remove water, and clean out the internal and outside water drainage of your home or building

Once they arrive, the SERVPRO of South Palm Beach team will begin the repair and restoration process:

Assessment

Our technicians determine if the water is from a clean source or an unsanitary place like a sewerage system. SERVPRO of South Palm Beach locates and measures the damage, from subfloors to inside the wall cavities and elsewhere.

Water removal

We use powerful vacuums capable of removing thousands of gallons every hour.

Drying

Our licensed restoration professionals have the knowledge and heavy-duty
equipment to start the air movement necessary to dry out your home or facility. They will also inspect the affected areas for mold.

Without prompt action, water damage is virtually guaranteed to spread and become permanent. The longer you wait, the greater the chance of mold growth and unrecoverable property. So, if you live in Boca Raton and have a water issue, call SERVPRO of South Palm Beach immediately at 561-391-3366. Our professionals have the expertise to reverse and prevent the devastating effects of flooding and water damage.

Immediate Steps to Take if Your Boca Raton Business Suffers From Water Damage

5/8/2018 (Permalink)

Let’s face it, water damage is threatening to your property’s value and can cause some serious, well damage. Whether you’re facing a storm; a flood; leaks from a weakened roof, HVAC or busted pipes; or experience overflowing appliances, water damage can wreak havoc in an array of emergency situations. To prevent further damage and to increase chances of salvation, it is critical to act quickly within the first 24 hours. Considering you have safely evacuated the premises and safety officials have declared it safe, follow these steps to immediately rectify your business from water damage.

Avoid Additional Risks

Upon returning to your property, survey the premises and document any visible structural damage that may further endanger you and your property. Look for signs of warping, loosened or cracked foundation elements, and holes. If safety officials haven’t done so already, contact utility companies to cease all water and electrical sources. Even if the power is still out upon your return, physically turn off the main power line and individual fuses to avoid risk of electrocution should the power be reactivated.

Document Everything

While surveying your property, take photos and document all damages. Digital photos will allow you to properly store, back-up and transfer files quickly and conveniently. Be sure to document all damages prior to removing any water or starting on any repairs; otherwise, you risk decreasing the extent of your insurance coverage.

Contact your Insurance Provider

Contacting your insurance provider is critical immediately following water damage and your return to the property. Your insurance provider will be able to assess the situation, file a claim, determine whether or not the damage is severe enough to send an adjuster, and provide invaluable next steps. They will also ask for the documentation you’ve collected so it’s important to have that readily available. Pro Tip: if government authorities have declared your region a ‘disaster area’, property owners may have access to increased resources, services and financial assistance.

Secure the Property

Place board over broken windows, fasten tarps, and carryout other measures to avoid further leaks and water damage.  Be sure to document all of your efforts to secure your property from further damage.  If these precautionary steps are not taken and something else happens, additional damages may not be covered by your insurance provider.

Mitigate Mold Damage

It only takes 24-48 hours for mold to develop following a flood or water damage. If items have been wet for less than 48 hours, they may be salvageable. Remove wet contents such as carpeting and furniture as soon as possible. If an item has been exposed longer than 48 hours, it may be harder and more expensive to salvage. If possible, you can start the drying out process within 24 hours and eliminate mold and mildew growth by:

  • Removing wet furniture or lifting it off of carpet
  • Place aluminum foil or other carpet separators on furniture to prevent carpet stains
  • Remove and hang area rugs to dry
  • Use fans and dehumidifiers to dry out wet areas
  • Turn air conditioning on to help remove humidity and speed the drying process

Contact A Professional Restoration Service

If any amounts of water need more than a mop and you’ve followed the immediate steps to secure your business, water removal may require professional attention. SERVPRO of South Palm Beach has the expertise, training and equipment to quickly remedy water damages and help your business get back to working order faster. Mold Remediation in Your Boca Raton Home or Business?

4/30/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of South Palm Beach offers mold remediation and restoration; we have the training, equipment and expertise to better assist you.

It is preferred that you have an Industrial Hygienist protocol (mold test) done before the work is begins?

This is a process where air sampling and affected areas are tested to provide a detailed remediation and restoration protocol for SERVPRO of South Palm Beach to follow. There is also a post-test that will take place once we are finished to confirm clearance.

Every time our team handles a mold job, we are required to wear the appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) which includes items such as coveralls and respirators.

SERVPRO of South Palm Beach will make sure to keep anything deemed salvageable; we go above and beyond to ensure restoration before removal.  Unfortunately, in most situations there is some tear out involved to remove affected areas such as drywall, flooring, and/or furniture.

During the mold remediation process a HEPA vacuum is used, HEPA filters are designed to capture particles as small as mold spores and to ensure that they do not get reintroduced. Our mold experts use “negative air” containment, which is created by positioning negative air machines to introduce clean air into the affected area and push contaminated air outside the home.

You want to consider getting your HVAC cleaned as well, the mold spores can collect there and be dispersed throughout the home.

Every mold infestation is different, from the amount of mold to the types of materials affected. Each scenario requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. If you have any questions, give SERVPRO of South Palm Beach a call at 561-391-3366.

Boca Raton Fire Damage- How long do you have to escape a house fire

4/28/2018 (Permalink)

Everyone knows not to dawdle if their house is on fire, but you may believe you have some time to make a safe exit. Well, think again.

In this video, Gail McGovern, the president of the Red Cross reveals that you only have two (just two!) minutes to get out of your home before you might get stuck in the flames. This is because it only takes about five minutes for a fire to consume your entire house. And with one in seven people dying in a house fire each day, there's little room for error.

Practicing fire safety certainly requires vigilance, but it doesn't take too much effort to avoid a tragedy. First, make sure you have smoke alarms in your home (5 million American homes don't). You need one in every bedroom, one outside every sleeping area, and at least one on every floor. Make sure the detectors are working and refresh their batteries when you change the clocks for the beginning and end of Daylight Saving Time.

Also, it's important to practice fire drills with your family (get the Red Cross' guidelines here). You should go over possible routes to get out of your house fast, and consider getting escape ladders for any rooms on upper floors. Choose a meeting place outside that's a safe distance from your home.

And of course, you should take steps to prevent fires from happening in the first place. Watch the video to learn which common mistakes you might be making.

What to Do After a Flood in you Boca Raton business or home?

4/27/2018 (Permalink)

Storms can cause severe damage to your home—potentially even making them unsafe! SERVPRO is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for catastrophic storm response, and you can call us at (561) 391-3366 to get immediate help.

What You Should Do After a Flood

Even if you were properly prepared for the flood and weathered the storm until it passed, your home could still have sustained heavy damage. Now that the sky is blue once more, how do you proceed? Here’s a look at what to do after a flood:

Be Cautious

Just because the sun is shining, and the flood waters have receded, that doesn’t mean all danger has passed. Exercise caution by doing the following:

  • Tune into local alerts and warning systems to stay up-to-date with current information and receive expert, informed advice about the flood. After all, additional flooding could still occur.
  • Stay away from rushing water. Moving water only 6 inches deep can sweep you off your feet.
  • Avoid walking through large areas of standing water, which may be electrically charged by downed power lines. The water could also be hiding broken glass or dangerous animals.
  • Unless you are specifically asked for help by the police, fire department, or relief workers, keep out of damaged areas.
  • Help emergency workers by staying off the roads in and out of the damaged neighborhood or region.
  • If you’re caught in a stalled car during a flash flood, abandon the car and get to higher ground immediately.
  • Heed barricades and find an alternate route if you encounter one blocking your way. Crossing bridges even after the water has receded could be dangerous if the structural integrity has been jeopardized.
  • Return home only when the authorities permit it. Even then, stay out of the building if it’s surrounded by flood waters and exercise extreme caution when you do enter.

Stay Safe and Healthy

Take care of you and your family as cleanup efforts begin. To stay safe and healthy, remember the following:

  • Turn off the home’s electricity at the main breaker box, even if the power is out. Only turn the power on when your home is dry.
  • Avoid floodwater, which may be contaminated with sewage, gasoline, or oil.
  • Fix damaged sewer systems as soon as possible.
  • Don’t drink water from the tap. Listen to news reports to learn when the community’s water is safe to drink again.

Clean and Repair Your Home

  • Use the information in the Repairing Your Flooded Home PDF from the Red Cross to learn how to enter your home safely, protect your belongings from future damage, record damage for insurance claims, check for gas leaks, and begin the cleanup process.
  • Contact your insurance agent to discuss your claim.
  • Hire a professional water damage mitigation company as soon as possible. It’s important that the company is qualified for the services you need. SERPVRO of South Palm Beach is available 24/7 to help when you need it most. Not only are we a local command center, but we also have the resources of 1,600 franchises nationwide—meaning no disaster is too big.

Minimize Boca Raton Storm Damage with our Trained Professionals

4/25/2018 (Permalink)

If you have ever endured storm damage to your Boca Raton home, SERVPRO of South Palm Beach is here to help.  Our employees are trained and certified by the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) to ensure that the technicians have the expertise in restoring your home.

In cases where there is flood damage to your home, the IICRC categorizes four different classes of destruction as follows:

  • Class 1:  The lowest and easiest to deal with, this has a slow evaporation rate. Only part of a room or area was affected, there is little or no wet carpet, and the moisture has only affected materials with a low permeance rate, such as plywood or concrete.
  • Class 2:  With a fast evaporation rate, this level affects an entire room, carpeting, or cushioning, the wetness has wicked up the walls at least 12”, and there is moisture remaining in structural materials.
  • Class 3:  This class has the fastest evaporation rate, and ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet and sub-floors are all saturated. The liquid may have come from overhead.
  • Class 4:  This class is labeled as specialty drying situations, which means there has been enough liquid and time to saturate materials with very low permeance, such as hardwood, brick, or stone.

If your home is ever in need of restoration services from flood damage, call SERVPRO of South Palm Beach at 561-391-3366

Mold issues in Boca Raton: What Causes Mold ?

4/23/2018 (Permalink)

What does Mold Need to Grow?

·        A food source (eg wood, drywall, cotton)

·        Darkness (mold can't grow under ultraviolet light)

·        Warmth (mold can't grow in freezing temperatures)

·        Oxygen

·        Moisture (eg water leaks, humidity)

·        Enough time (most molds can begin to grow in 24-48 hours if the conditions are right)

Humidity Causes Mold

If you live where humidity in the air is naturally high, like by the coast or another large body of water, then mold growth in your home can also be a recurring problem.

Leaking Pipes Cause Mold

Water leaks from pipes are a common cause of mold growth. The worst leaks are the ones that go undetected because they are hidden out of view, like inside a wall. By the time you discover these leaks mold has usually started to grow already.

Leaks in Roof Cause Mold

Like some leaking pipes, a roof that leaks into the attic might not be discovered until it's already lead to mold growth.

The best thing to do is to check the attic regularly for leaks and keep an eye on the ceiling below the attic. If you notice any signs of water damage on the ceiling or any mold that has grown through then you probably have a leaking roof.

Poor Ventilation Causes Mold

If your home is poorly ventilated it can create pockets of stagnant moist air which mold thrives in. Steam and water evaporating into the air creates humidity inside which then needs to be circulated outdoors through windows to keep the moisture level balanced.

Flooding Causes Mold

Mold problems can develop after your home has been affected by flooding. The most effective way to prevent mold growth after a flood in your Boca Raton home, is to call SERVPRO of South Palm Beach immediately.  Our 24/7/365 response will be start the process of removing water and drying your home.  This step greatly reduces the possibility of mold growth.

If you have any questions about what additional steps do take if you think you have mold, please call us at 561-391-3366.

Boca Raton Storm Damage Cleanup in Your Home

4/20/2018 (Permalink)

Do you have a plan to protect your Boca Raton home or business in the event of a Hurricane ?

Your Boca Raton home can fall victim to unexpected storm devastation. As soon as your home is disturbed by wind, water and debris, its effects can be devastating. Our top priority is to improve direct hazards as quickly as possible, whether it is exterior or interior damage.

What You Can Expect from Storm Damage

Even though people experience damaging storms throughout the country, it can be specifically brutal in Florida. Whatever storms are thrown at you, there is a likelihood that your home will have damage. Damage can be very destructive or not as serious.

Storms throughout the country can cause hazardous damage that will need to be fixed – from tornadoes to severe thunderstorms. With these kinds of storms comes strong wind bursts, torrential rain, and electrical disturbances that affect your property.

Being unable to repair damage inflicted on the outside of your home can be unnerving, which is why rainstorms and high winds are equally as damaging. Heavy rain and intense wind are strong enough to break trees and utility poles, jeopardizing your roof and home exterior.

Emergency Repairs

We at SERVPRO of South Palm Beach offer 24/7 emergency services to Boca Raton and Highland Beach because we realize that hazardous weather can appear at any moment. When you’re looking for urgent service, we will work with you anytime, day or night.
